Overview:

Unit 1 will focus on cartoonist and cartoons as a style of art. During lesson 1 you will research how cartoonists create and develop their artwork as well as how the utilize various elements of art and principles of design.

NM Standards and Benchmarks:

  • 1A: Explore and understand the elements of art (color, form, line, shape, space, texture and value) and principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, proportion, repetition, rhythm, unity and variety) and what makes them effective in solving specific art problems and artistic intentions.
  • 3B: Examine how specific works are created and how they relate to historical and cultural contexts, science and the humanities.
  • 4A: Analyze the qualities and characteristics of various art media, techniques, and process that influence the creative process.
  • 8A: Analyze and evaluate art in various public settings, including community displays and internet museums.

Students Will or I-Can Statements:

  • I can identify ways in which cartoonist use the elements of art and principles of design in their artwork.
  • I can research information about cartoonists and cartooning in order explain the creative process used in creating a cartoon.

  • 1.1.a: Research
