Creating the illusion of depth means using shading to create darks and lights.
There are 4 types of shading:
- Hatching: Uses lines going in one direction
- Cross Hatching: Uses lines going in different directions
- Stippling: Uses dots
- Blending: Uses gradation of tones

ASSIGNMENT:
Divide your paper up into 16 squares and create your own hatching, crosshatching, stippling and blending chart like the example.
Be sure to:
- Neatly draw your forms
- Carefully use the different methods to create the illusion of depth
- Add shadows to your forms
- Identify each of the techniques
Your artwork can be completed by hand or on the computer using a drawing program.
Along with the digital image answer the following questions:
- How does an artist create form in order to fool the eye?
- How is form similar and different to the element of art shape?
- How is proportion used to show distance in a piece of art?
- What is the golden mean and how is this related to proportion?
Upload your file for grading:
To submit your artwork and artist statement upload your file to the dropbox by clicking the underlined heading "3.3.a: Form".
If you completed this activity on a piece of paper you can either scan the artwork using a scanner or take a digital picture of it.
Note: Along with uploading the assignment for grading you will also post a copy of your artwork in your portfolio
