Course Syllabus

Course Description

This Applied Math course aligns to the high school standards for Mathematics I or Algebra 1 and Geometry with an emphasis on application. The standards are used in a contextual environment. The fundamental purpose of this course is to extend the mathematics that students learned in Mathematics I or Algebra 1 and Geometry through applications. This course should allow the students to apply the concepts learned in Mathematics I or Algebra 1 and Geometry and should not be the first time students learn these concepts. The critical areas deepen and extend understanding of linear and exponential relationships through analyzing, solving, and using quadratic functions and expand and explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships. The Standards for Mathematical Practice apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

Course Description

The goal is to increase the student’s knowledge of functions.  This will include polynomial, rational, and radical functions.  Connections will be made with a student’s knowledge of linear, quadratic, and exponential functions.  Students will use complex numbers to solve quadratic equations.  Properties of Logarithms will be introduced.

If you are personally in Remote Learning or in Quarantine

You need to make sure you log into canvas once a day

You need to complete the assignments on Canvas.

Canvas has all the work you need to do for that specific week

In case you do not know what to do,,,make summary of the videos for that week and attach your summary to assignment.

What you need to know:

  • I encourage every student to submit their assignments during class into the correct assignment. They will remain open during the day, submitting  your assignments after class is considered late, but I still give you 100% of the credit if you submit the same day. After that you are going to obtain 50% of the credit.

  • If I have not seen any assignments turned in for 2 weeks, I will send your name to the office so we can reach out to you to problem solve what is getting in the way of your education.

  • Assignments     60%   Final Exam  20% Final Project 20%
  • The LCPS grading scale will be used.
  • Assignments are due each day but open for a week, they close every Friday
  • If you do not send one assignment your grade is going to be 50
  • I will not re-open the assignments

When we are all in Remote Learning

  • When we are in Red Remote Learning, attendance will not be taken.
  • Monday and Tuesday:
    • You are encouraged to attend the Zoom meetings on the Instructional Support Days if you need any assistance. Using Zoom, I will answer specific questions that any student has. You may also call or text with specific questions during my office hours. I will try to return your call the same day between 7-3:30.
  • Wednesday:
    • Remote Learning Day for students, work on this or other homework.   I can be reached by phone 915-567-2017 during my office hours.
  • Thursday and Friday:

These days are Direct Instruction.  I will have pre-recorded lessons about the next assignment.  You may watch these lessons as many times as needed.  You also may watch them at any time of the day that works in your schedule. Please take notes, and turn them in after! The assignment will be posted on Canvas and it will have a due date.  I know that everyone’s life has been impacted by the pandemic, if you have an unforeseen circumstance I will work with you, please let me know! I am willing to accept all late work but PLEASE, keep up with your assignments if you can! Do not wait until the last week, or days to turn in work.  If all students waited till last week, I would not be able to correct it all.  Contact me if you have any concerns.
