CLASS DESCRIPTION

Advisory is a year, long 50-minute class designed to help you balance your academic load with your future goals. You will have lessons on how to respond to bullying, harassment, and intimidation, coping with stress, time management, study skills, college readiness, goal setting, and grade calculation. This will also be where you prepare for student-led conferences and IEP's. There will be study group time everyday to catch up on missing work or to improve grades. I will meet with you at least once every week during the quarter to discuss your grades and academic progress with you, as well as any concerns you may have about your other classes.

PROCEDURES

Procedures are those steps that we follow in order to make tasks easier and more comfortable to do. In class this year, we’ll practice until our procedures become second nature.

START OF CLASS

When you enter the classroom at the start of the period, sharpen your pencil, pull out your paper, books, and assignments. Then, quietly start your entry task.

TARDY

If you come to class late, don’t draw attention to yourself. Move quietly to your seat, pull out the needed materials, and wait patiently until I can inform you about the class’s activities. If you are not seated when the bell rings, you are tardy.

End of Class

Always remember that I or the bell dismiss the class. A few minutes before the bell rings pick up, put away, push in, and realign. Do not line up by the door. Wait at your seat until the bell rings.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

  1. Writing utensil
  2. Computer and charger as everything is on canvas
  3. Small composition notebook for usernames and passwords (I will provide index card for all students)
  4. Headphones - Students need headphones to have volume up on computer otherwise it’s too noised.

ABSENCES/MAKE-UP WORK

  1. Students who are absent will be allowed to make up their work.  They will be given the same number of days to turn in the assignment as the number of days they were absent.
  2. It is up to YOU, the student, to ask for make-up work and make arrangements with myself the day you come back to school.  Do not wait several days after you have returned because make-up work WILL NOT be given.

At times throughout the school year we will be using movie clips in class to supplement lessons on coding, cyber bullying and or technology evolution. These movies have the possibility of having a rating of PG or PG-13. District regulations require teachers to have parental permission to show any movies rated over G in class. By signing this portion you will or will not allow your student to watch a movie with the above rating. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I will send home a note before we show any clip or movie that is PG-13.
